Boredom-busting projects for kids this school holidays

Kids have an innate desire to explore and learn. A great way to keep kids engaged and excited about learning is to make their own projects. To help parents and kids get through the winter school holidays during lockdown, we have put together the following ideas for home-based projects:

1) Create an edible garden of seasonal vegetables

Update the vegetable garden with seasonal, easy – to-grow vegetables such as snow peas, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuces, spinach and herbs. Get the kids involved in planting the vegetables and harvesting the produce to understand the benefits of growing your own vegetables.

2) Make an outdoor obstacle course

Get inspired by Ninja Warrior and set up an outdoor obstacle course using items in your household such as pool noodles, spare tyres, skipping ropes etc. Time each other while completing the course and host a podium presentation for all participants. The kids will love the fresh air running around in the backyard and they will use creativity and teamwork to design and develop the obstacle course.

3) Make up stories or write a song together.

Make up a song or story together by writing a list of objects, themes and places down on scraps of paper, placing them into a bowl and pulling out an object, theme and place for the inspiration for your song or story. For example, place: Sydney, object: a red car, theme: adventure. Get the kids involved by taking turns to make up a sentence of the story or line of the song each. Read the story or perform the song together, record it and share it with your loved ones!

4) Camp out in the living room

How much fun is a camp out?!

Set up a tent or build a fort in the living room using sheets, pillows and blankets. The kids will love setting up their campsite for an at-home camp out and movie night. Treat the kids with movie- themed snacks such as popcorn and choc top ice creams!

5) Get busy in the kitchen

Baking is a great way to introduce kids to cooking.

Some of our favourite recipes to complete with the kids include mini warm apple pies or fairy cakes. Check out our recipes here: <link>
